RICERCA
The scientific activity of prof. Poerio was carried out at the following research institutes: Institute of Organic and Biological Chemistry, University of Naples “Federico II” (september 1972 – october 1989); School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia. Norwich, U.K. (01.09.78 - 31.08.79); Laboratory of Chemical Biology, Section of Protein Conformation, National Institutes of Health. Bethesda, U.S.A (december 1981- may 1984); Department of Agrobiology and Agrochemistry, University of Tuscia, Viterbo (1.11.89 up to today). At the present, prof. Poerio is chief of the Laboratory of Plant chemistry and biochemistry at the Dept. of Agrobiology and Agrochemistry. The studies carried out in this laboratory regard, as general topic, investigations on structural and functional properties of a number wheat protein inhibitors isolated from endosperm of hexaploid wheat. This research intends also to clarify nutritional/anti-nutritional properties of these small proteins as well as their potential biotechnological applications to obtain plants with an increased resistance to insects and pathogens. Some techniques, commonly employed for this research, are: gene cloning; proteins heterologous expression; protein design and molecular modeling; site-specific mutagenesis; protein refolding; uv/vis spectroscopy; mass spectrometry. At the present, several collaborations have been activated with a number of institutions: Dept. of Scienze Ambientali (University of Tuscia); Dept. of Scienze della Vita (Seconda University of Naples); Dept. of Scienze Ambientali (Seconda University of Naples); Dept. of Structural and Functional Biology (University of Naples, “Federico II”); Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Reproduction (IPK) di Gatersleben (Germany).
